Calculating Property Tax

The following sample property tax worksheet uses 2007 Orleans Parish millage rates and a home valued at $100,000. For the most recent millage rates for Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, and St. Charles Parishes, scroll down to download a .pdf file.

Orleans Parish
Parish Millage .12920
Fire & Police .01047

Unlike other parishes, Orleans Parish has separate Fire and Police taxes which are never exempt. Fire and police taxes are included in the .12920 millage rate if there is not a homestead exemption.

How To Apply For Your Homestead Exemption in New Orleans

Application: There are seven assessment districts, each with its own assessor ( a list of Assessors and phone numbes follows). The seller, selling agent or closing attorney should be able to tell you the district your house is in. If you're not sure, you can call any one of the assessors or the main number for the board of assessors. Crescent Title has a list of assessors and their phone numbers.
To process your application, your assessor needs two things, one from your closing notary/attorney and one from you.

The closing notary/attorney will provide a recorded copy of the act of sale, proving that you purchased the property. (The notary is required to file this with the assessor within two weeks of the closing; you do NOT have to wait until you receive your copy in the mail.)
You must provide proof that you will reside in the property you just bought.

The different assessors handle the process in different ways. Here is a quick summary of what they require. (It's always good to start the application process with a phone call to your assessor to get full instructions and avoid an unnecessary trip to City Hall.)

* In the 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th districts, you can handle the process by phone. Simply call, tell them you've purchased the property and plan to live there, and they'll mail you a homestead exemption application card. Sign it, keep the white receipt and mail back the pink card.

* In the 3rd, 4th, and 5th districts, the assessors request that you apply in person. It's still wise to call first, to make sure the recorded act of sale has reached their office. When you go in, you must present proof that you can live at your new address. This can be your driver's license with the new address recorded on it, or an unpaid utility bill (such as water bill) sent to your new address. You sign the application card and get the receipt to take with you.

In some cases, the assessor will request that you fill out a form listing the square footage, number of rooms and condition of your home. In addition, they may ask you to provide a recent photo of the property. These are merely to gather up-to-date information on the property; they may be mailed back later and do not affect your application for homestead exemption.

Renewal: Once you have received your initial exemption, the annual renewal process is handled by mail. Renewal notices will go out in March for the following year's exemption. Simply sign the card and return it.
